2011 PFA Championship Team of The Year

The 2011 PFA Championship team of the year is as follows

Paddy Kenny (Queen’s Park Rangers)
Kyle Naughton (Leicester City)
Ian Harte (Reading)
Ashley Williams (Swansea City)
Wes Morgan (Nottingham Forest)
Adel Taarabt (Queens Park Rangers)
Scott Sinclair (Swansea City)
Andy King (Leicester City)
Wes Hoolahan (Norwich City)
Danny Graham (Watford)
Grant Holt (Norwich City)

The choices this year seem quite strong, with many of the division’s top performers recognised in the team.

The list is  a mixture of seasoned campaigners such as Paddy Kenny, Ian Harte and Wes Morgan, as well as young developing talent such as player of the year Adel Taarabt and Scott Sinclair. The PFA team is made up of players from seven different clubs with no teams over represented.

However these awards generally spark great debate as fans often feel that their club’s stand out performer has unjustly omitted from the team at the expense of an inferior player from a rival club.

There are however some club’s that have had great seasons without representation in the team of the year including Cardiff and Leeds, whilst players such as Shaun Derry (QPR) and Jay Bothroyd (Cardiff) will be wondering what more they could have possibly have done to made the list.

I would be interested to hear your thoughts, do you feel that there is a player missing from this XI? Or maybe a player added more for sentiment than his performances?

Thought Reading’s Shane Long would have been in the team after his performances this season especially as he has been good for the Republic of Ireland in Euro 2012 qualifiers to boot.

    Ditto. Where’s Shane Long?
26 goals for club & country, a brilliant foil last Saturday for 3 other goalscorers and unlike most of the other top Championship goalscorerers, he’s done it in the Premiership too

I expected Shane Long to have been aside Danny Graham. One of the underestimated players in the Championship.

bothroyd was very good for cardiff this season til he got his england call up – since then he’s whinged constantly and hasn’t performed.

You’re right- Bothroyd has lost it in recent weeks, but more to the point, why has Bellamy been omitted? Is he still officially classed as Premiership as he’s on loan?
As for Ashley Williams being included- somebody must be taking the p*ss!

I think brumbluebird answered his own question without knowing it! Bellamy is a Premiership player this is the CHAMPIONSHIP team of the year (remember)…as for Ashley Williams the PFA have recognised an outstanding (and consistant) performer for Swansea City FC and Wales!

Contrary to other ‘Cardiff fans’ belief, I understand why Bellamy & Bothroyd have not featured as they have not consistently performed throughout the season in my view. I am surprised however as to the omission of Cardiff’s Kevin McNaughton who I feel consistently demonstrates why he is probably the divisions best defender. His versatility coupled with continual monumental displays proves his value. McNaughton apart, I think it’s probably fair enough

I think Martin Taylor should definately be in the team, he is a rock solid defender and can score goals too. I haven’t seen him make a single mistake this season so I’m suprised not to see him in there.

As a Nottingham Forest fan I have to ask where is Lewis McGugan?
13 goals from midfield, 3 penalties and 10 screamers including a 35 yard free kick!
I would say that taarabt, sinclair and hoolahan have been better than him but I feel Andy King has not done as well.

Without a doubt Julian Speroni should have made the team in front of Kenny! Yes, palace had a poor season finishing 20th but without Speroni I doubt we would have stayed up! Best keeper outside of the premiership by a long shot! And also, as djw pointed out, Kyle Naughton is a premiership player and I would therefore stick Clyne at right back.

Im surprised out of all defenders that Luke Chambers didn’t get a shout. He’s miles better than Morgan (who is a great player anyway). Secondly, no Lewis McGugan….that’s criminal.

Mark you have no sense of reality. Andy King has scored 15 goals from midfield in an average season for Leicester City. He has also played for the senior Wales team!
